Tag Archives: Epiphany

Today in our Christian calendar year is the day of Epiphany. Or the day that the wise men came to see the Messiah.

As a pastoral family, it is important to us that our girls understand all the church holidays, not just “THE BIG TWO.” First, we put away all of the Christmas decorations earlier this week after we got home from our travels to visit family. But I didn’t put away the two children’s nativity sets. I want to talk to the kids about what happened on epiphany that made this day important. With three-year-old kids, visuals are important. SO we have this nativity…

So I have been coming up with some activities to do with the girls this afternoon after school.

While my kindergartener is still at school, I am going to make some cookies with my cookie press. I know it would be more fun for her if I let her help, but I just can’t handle that kind of mess.

Here is my favorite recipe:

1 cup sugar
1 cup butter, at room temperature
2 – 2 1/2 cups flour
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
These cookies are my favorite to make because the dough doesn’t require chilling before the cookies are pressed out.Combine all ingredients well. Pack into cookie press and press shapes out onto a greased cookie sheet.

I like to sprinkle them with colored sugar before baking, so I don’t have to decorate them later.

Bake in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes, watching carefully as these cookies over-bake easily. Remove when lightly golden brown along edges. Cool on wire racks.

So after school I will have the girls decorate these crowns that they can wear as we have a tea party and read the story of the wise men visiting Jesus from Matthew chapter 2.

If you would like to make your own crowns, here is my template that you may use.

Finally, our last project for the day is a star to remind us of a prayer focus for each day. You can find instructions to make one here. I don’t have any yellow construction paper, so we will also be making this out of craft foam.

May you see Jesus reflected in your world today. Thanks for stopping by!
